The Crude Trading Analyst position supports the Crude Oil Trading team by providing trading and commercial related analysis. Crude Oil Trading is part of the Global Feedstocks Value Chain, a cross-functional organization integral to optimizing refinery input value for MPC. Crude Oil Trading interfaces with external parties and executes Trading Deals for supply based on refinery economics, demands, market conditions and logistics with the goal of maximizing economic margin for MPC.

This Trading Analyst position is a growth opportunity for a highly motivated individual that has a strong aptitude and a keen interest for a commercial career. This role will provide an opportunity for the successful candidate to gain an understanding of crude oil supply and trading while performing complex and critical functions on a growing team.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Interface with Clean Products trade analyst to share and validate Supply & Demand assumptions and inputs
  • Leverage industry contacts to cross reference assumptions and benchmark industry expectations
  • Review weekly EIA inventory projection calls on PADD3 and Cushing volumes to determine if forward model projections are actualizing as expected
  • Facilitate regional team meetings to review fundamentals and S&D analysis, supporting dialog that moves past the data and enables the team to make actionable trades
  • Reconcile industry flows with forward looking Supply & Demand modeling
  • Review 3rd party (Platts, Genscape, Woodmac, etc.) research and determine differences in S&D assumptions vs market consensus and layer in our own proprietary insights
  • Develop and maintain models and tools to monitor market drivers to support trading opportunities in the Permian, Houston, Gulf of Mexico and US Crude Exports markets
  • Review investor presentations to determine capex growth, infrastructure projects, crude productions targets and industry consensus views
  • Monitor USGC refinery margin models and outages and the impact on the S&D model

Qualification & Experience:

  • Experience in building Tableau reports and dashboards is preferred but not required
  • Exposure to crude oil fundamentals is preferred
  • Team player and ability to work in fast-paced environment
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and organization skills, innovative thinker
  • Bachelor’s degree required in business, finance, marketing, economics, engineering, or related field of study
  • Strong understanding of Excel is required
  • Prefer 5 or more years of experience in trading analytics, risk, scheduling, or other commercial exposure roles
